Dewey Decimal System

The dewey decimal system is a way of organizing books and confusing the common man. i remember back in grade school we had to learn this system and it took our whole class forever. i do remember that it runs from 000-on up to 900 i think. each number is associated with a class or catagory like medicine, environment, sports ect. Now my take on the DDC. I'm wondering why cant we just label the books by the last name and stick them in the appropriate section? it seems alot easier and it wouldnt waste so much time having to label all the books. but thats just me. Here is some history and information on the dewey decimal system. It was founded in 1876 by melvin dewey, i guess that's  why they call it the dewey decimal system. anyways it does go from numbers 000 to 900 and does have the different classifications of subjects. Im not to much of a book guy but i do think it is a way to organize books. I think they should just assign it a number and be done with it but thats just me. They can call it the nicky decimal system~Nickel
